Bill Granger Cook Books

Australian Chef Bill Granger passed away over Christmas. He was in his mid 50’s.

For someone the same age as he was that stopped me in my tracks when I heard the news.

Author of several cook books and proprietor of restaurants in Australia, London, Japan and South Korea, I was lucky enough to visit the London and Sydney locations a few times. The food was/is fresh, seasonal, optimistic, and always tasty. I never met the guy, but from interviews and from the notes in his cook books, he had a self depreciating turn of phrase and a sunniness and optimism in his writing.

The first book I bought was Sydney Food, the second, Bill’s Basics and the third, which I had to pre order because no one stocks it in SF, was Australian Food.

I’ve poured over these in recent weeks, wanting to recreate his work as a tribute, I guess?

Whatever the reason, it’s been a joy to rediscover these books and to remember the avo toast or summer salads I enjoyed at Bills. Until next time I’m there.

Thank you Bill.
